This 2011 movie is based on the 1954 historical adventure novel by Rosemary Sutcliff, The Eagle of the Ninth, which is itself based on the legend of the Legio IX Hispana (Ninth Spanish Legion) which is alleged to have disappeared in Britain around AD 117.
